Caminocorps Soap Drive Culmination Event-Soap For Hope Day!!

"We are Caminocorp and we clean the world!"

On Friday, March 4th 2011, Caminocorps held their "Soap For Hope" soap drive event, at Camino Nuevo High School. The student run, social justice group promoted and raised awareness for their soap drive for over a month!

Caminocorps members spoke to the student body at Camino Nuevo High School's monthly community dialogue sessions, informing their fellow classmates on the situation in Haiti, what was needed of them and the goals for the soap drive.

The group was inspired by Clean The World, a non-profit organization that recycles used bars of soap and sends them to places in need, particularly Haiti. The earthquake that ravaged the island country has left many without the basic essentials of life.

Haiti is also fighting a cholera outbreak that has left thousands sick and dying. One the main ways to fight the cholera outbreak is simply washing your hands, but many in Haiti are so impoverished that a bar of soap can be a luxury in their lives.

When our students and staff heard about this, they leapt at the chance to help out. They were excited to help fight the cholera outbreak, possibly save lives and spread the word on preventable hygiene related diseases.

To start the project, students collected bars of soap, designed collection boxes and placed them in classes, and wrote letters to present to the community.

YPI/ROE site coordinator Virginia Ruiz worked with other YPI site leads and delivered boxes to schools and business eager to help out. YPI/ROE Enrichment Specialists Laron Cue and Jose Beltran lead a group of Caminocorp students to local businesses and delivered drop off boxes.
As the soap drive progressed, Camino Nuevo students diligently worked toward raising as many soap donations as possible.

Several other schools and local organizations joined our soap drive as well, including Los Angeles Academy of Arts and Enterprise Charter, New Village Charter Academy, Monsenor Oscar Romero Middle School, SEA Charter South Gate, and Hollywood Silverlake Hotels & Suites. Soon it was time to celebrate!

The day kicked off with activities and music, during the school lunch period. Students and staff participated in feats of strength, as the school yard favorite Tug of War kicked off!

Jose Beltran, YPI Counselor and Caminocorp director played music and emceed the mid-day event, while the students took turns battling it out with the rope! This was just a warm up for the rest of the days events.

After school, students went to the soccer field as the YPI/ROE staff set up for the day. More rounds of Tug of War started, as well as soccer shooting challenge, basketball on the far courts, and music from WYPI DJS and Camino Nuevo's unofficial school band, Rubia Sabrosa and the Chii Chii Chiings!

One of the things that many students wanted to do was send personal letters and cards to Haiti, to let those who receive their donations that they care! Our young urban arts students designed and painted a wonderful graffiti mural on the main campus, with the words "From LA to Haiti" surrounded by hearts and two cartoon soap bars.

The students have no idea who or where their artwork will end up, but they created it and sent it with love, adding to the good times of the day.

With everyone's help, we were able to bring in over 50 lbs of soap, shampoos and body wash products!

Friday's event was a huge success, with fun filled activities, urban art, live music, snacks, basketball and a friendly soccer competition to wrap up the day! We want to thank all of the participating schools, students, parents, teachers and local businesses that chipped in and helped make our soap drive a success! We could not have done it without your help!

Enjoy our pictures below and remember....SOAP SAVES LIVES!!

We also went door to door, giving away energy efficient light bulbs to our neighbors!

DJ BIO: DJ-J/D double J

Hey everyone! My name is Jenny a.k.a DJ-J or D double J!

I was born the daughter of a musician on May 3, 1994, inherited the musical gene, and now I have a passion to sing! Most times, I feel like it is the only way I can express my thoughts and feelings. If I’m happy or something good happened that day, I will sing a cheerful song. If I’m sad, I won’t cry, I will just sing and let it all out.

I am most happy when I am listening or singing to my favorite songs, recording a CD with a famous celebrity again (I have sung with Flea from RHCP, and Ryan Gosling from the movie The Notebook), hanging with my friends, or riding a roller coaster at Six Flags!
I get really angry when people bring up my past but I feel alright about it now because you learn from your past and I’ve learned and tried not to make the same mistakes I made then! :)

My feelings about school are positive feelings. I want to finish high school and continue my education by going to College and/or University and make not only myself proud, but my family proud. The proudest moment of my life was when I found out that I passed the CAHSEE on my first try.

My favorite subjects right now will probably have to be English and Chemistry because I like to write, and I like science for some reason. I would love to be able to have a music education program to teach aspiring musicians like myself, how to read, compose, and of course, play music.

My favorite after school activity is being on the WYPI-ROE Radio crew!!!

MUSIC REVIEW::"The Gathering"-Living Legends-Living Up To The Name

"The Gathering - Living Legends"

"Living Up To The Name" By DJ Azteca

So for those of you who don’t know Living Legends is a group composed of some of the most influential artist of our generation. "The Gathering" is definitely a must get album for anyone with any self respect. First of all the beats are consuming and the lyrics are for lack of better words banging. All artist were equally amazing and all brought there own unique flow to the table.

The track "She Wants Me" was an amazing song and is guarantee to make you’re spot the hottest spot in the city [if you are a club dj]. "Pants On Fire" was just straight gangster music something you can really bump your head to. "War and Peace" was such a strong message, so just open you’re ears and embrace it. "Samba" is a song that brings the spice to your ears. The last song was an excellent ending to an excellent album.

Thank Legendary Music for making this album possible. A 4.5 out of 5 is what I give this album not quite a 5 because to be a 5 it would have to include NaS another living legend.

DJ Azteca can be heard every Wednesday afternoon, live on WYPI ROE Radio, with his highly insightful "Word Of The Day" segment! Each week he will present a single word that we can all focus and think about during the week, and his reasons for picking that word! Last week's word was Mercy. Tune in next week to hear the Word Of The Day!

DJ Bio: Mike #1

All I need is ONE MIKE!! Mike # 2 in the foreground, as Mike #1 types in the back!

My name is Michael Lopez, but some people call me Mike. My birthday is on December 6th, 1992. My family is made up of my parents, my brother and sister, and lastly me. We hail from the indegionous people of El Salvador.

I am very interested in Parkour, a French martial art, and fighting. I don’t like being bored or holding still, I like to be moving which is why I like Parkour.

I have a special friend whose name is Plank… he is a 2x4 piece of wood who I can always talk to. I am very good at learning fight styles. I am not so good at following directions. I spend a lot of time on rooftops thinking or training.

I would like to learn more about cars since I’d like to my own shop. I have a few good and bad habits, but I don’t really know them. The proudest moment of my life would be when I won my first fight way back when.

The very best movie I have ever seen would have to be Unleashed. Jet Li is a very good actor, even aside from his amazing fight scenes. People can’t seem to see or realize that simply because of his language barrier. His accent in English movies doesn’t help much, but he is still a good actor.

Be sure to be on the lookout of the Mike & Mike show on wypi_radio_show

DJ BIO:MIKE#1

My name is Michel Romero. Some people call me Mike. My birthday is on May 21st of 1993. My family is made up of 5 members, my dad, mom, my three sisters and me. I am interested in video games, movies, and books. I don’t like hard work, sitting or standing still.

I am very good at video games. I am not so good at sports. I spend a lot of time on the computer. I would be much better of if people didn’t bug me as much as they do. I get really angry when people get things wrong. what I mean by that is that I get angry when I see someone fail and I know that they can do a much better job.

If I could only change the way I procrastinate I'd be much better of. The proudest moment of my life was when I snuck into Staples Center for free to see the Lakers game. Some day I would like to create a video game.

The very best movie that I have ever seen is Godzilla Final Wars. My feelings toward school are mostly negative, because I always get bad grades. I often wish that I was smarter or more athletic, I'm working on it.

I always learn better if I'm with a friend. I find it difficult to learn when I'm alone. If it was possible to change one thing about myself it would definitely be how I often procrastinate. I enjoy eating, watching TV, playing video games, surfing the net, listening to music, and reading. I am very happy when things tend to go my way. The most important person in my life would be my parents. My favorite subject is graphic design. The subject I don’t like are English, and science. When I look closely in the mirror I often see my true self.

Be sure to listen to wpyi radio for the MIKE AND MIKE SHOW.

DJ BIO: DJ Retro X

YO WHATS UP! MY NAME IS ELVIS SOME PEOPLE ALSO CALL ME TURTLE. MY BIRTHDAY IS ON JANUARY 29TH. MY FAMILY IS MADE UP OF 5 PEOPLE MOM,DAD,BROTHER,SISTER,AND ME WE COME FROM A HISPANIC BACKGROUND.

I AM INTERESTED IN GRAFFITI ART AND POETRY,BUT WHAT I DISLIKE ARE PEOPLE THAT THINK THEIR BETTER THAN EVERYONE SO THEY JUDGE. PEOPLE SAY THAT MY GRAFFITI SKILLS ARE GOOD SO I GUESS I AM GOOD AT THAT. I SPEND A LOT OF TIME DOWNLOADING ELECTRO MUSIC AND DRAWING. WHEN I GET THE CHANCE I LIKE TO GO TO THE BEACH AND WATCH THE SUN SET.

I WOULD BE BETTER OFF IF I SPENT MORE TIME REFLECTING ON WHAT I HAVE DONE , SINCE I MAKE MISTAKES THAT I REALISE LATER ON AND FEEL ASHAMED.YET I BELIEVE EVERYBODY DESERVES A SECOND SHOT AT ANYTHING SINCE THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.

SOME DAY I WILL MEET A FASE IN MY LIFE WHEN I FEEL ACCOMPLISHED OF WHAT I HAVE DONE THROUGHOUT MY LIFE ONLY THEN I WILL FEEL TRULY SATISIFIED. I OFTEN WISH THAT PEOPLE WOULD ACCEPT THAT PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT OPPINIONS OR WAYS OF LIFE AND BE ACCEPTED FOR WHAT THEY ARE HUMAN BEEINGS.

THE PERSON I VALUE THE MOST IS MY MOTHER SINCE SHES THE ONE THAT IS ALWAYS THERE FOR ME.

TUNE INTO WYPI ROE RADIO, YOU MAY HEAR MY SHOW VERY SOON!
